Automobile modifications are popular because they allow drivers to express their individuality while enhancing their vehicles’ appearance and performance.

However, your auto insurance rates could change if you significantly modify your vehicle. If you fail to inform your insurance carrier of the changes you have made, it may jeopardize your ability to file a claim in the event of damage to your aftermarket components.

There’s also the issue that specific vehicle alterations may be prohibited or subject to particular regulations depending on where you reside. Although your vehicle’s customized features may be perfectly legal in your home state, you must be mindful of the rules of every state through which you pass.

According to Hot Cars, the value of the aftermarket automotive industry has risen to hundreds of billions of dollars and is still expanding rapidly. Look at this list of state-by-state restrictions and outright bans on vehicle customizations, including car wraps that you might want to consider before you buy.

Loud Exhausts

Mufflers are on cars, so the exhaust system doesn’t make too much noise. Most of the time, it’s against the law to take them off, and each state has its own rules about how loud your exhaust can be.

For example, Texas doesn’t have a clear law about exhaust. But the noise limit in many other states is 90 or 95 decibels, and some cities have their own noise rules for engines.

Neon Light

One widespread change from The Fast and the Furious movies is to put neon lights on the bottom of a car. Many states have laws that say you can’t use this kind of lighting.

It can make other drivers pay less attention to the road. Some states let cars have amber or white lights, while others don’t allow flashing lights.

A Raised Suspension

Changes to a car’s suspension are common. These changes can make the distance between the car’s body and the road bigger or smaller. But again, rules vary from state to state, so you’ll have to check this one twice.

You can only raise your suspension by a maximum of 4 inches in Connecticut. On the other hand, it is said that New York does not have any limits on suspension lift or frame height. Lift Laws say that the size of the bumper must be between 16 and 20 inches.

The Back and Side Windows Have a Very Dark Tint

Tinted windows can help keep things cool when it’s hot, but they can be dangerous if they’re too dark. This law is different in each state, so if you’ve made this change to your car in a place where it’s not allowed, a police officer might pull you over.

In Houston, tinting must let 70% of light through side windows in the front and 40% through side windows in the back.
